    Dear Friends,

This web site is scheduled to launch this upcoming fall in 2008, but
before this time, an opportunity presented itself to demonstrate
the plight of the animals caught up in the puppy mill and backyard
breeder trade.  These collateral materials are available to print out
and use for this purpose by other humane organizations dedicated
to the same cause in the meantime:

  • California: Puppy Mills, Backyard Breeders, Pet Shops - The Issues Involved  The marketplace of California ranks as the third largest in the nation for pet shop sales.  The backyard breeders of this state contribute greatly to the euthanizing of healthy pets, costing a quarter of a billion dollars each year from CA taxpayers.   Unrecovered sales tax is reported to exceed $180 million dollars annually - or 5% of the the state's current budget shortfall  |DOWNLOAD|
  • DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM: Where are all these puppies coming from?  Where are all these puppies going to?  The first step in any problem is defining it.  There are three sources of puppies: puppy mills, backyard breeders and reputable breeders - know the differences and the solution can be found.   |DOWNLOAD|
  • Just how purebred is that purebred puppy?  In the first two months of 2008, over 1,200 AKC dogs were converted to 'conditional registration' because of their DNA program  |DOWNLOAD|
  • Junior Horton:  Biggest puppy mill bust in this nation's history  It began in November of 2007 when Virginia officials found Mr. Horton with 1,100 dogs and licensed for only 500.  During the seizure process, Mr. Horton was able to sell, hide or get rid of almost 300 animals.   In May of 2008, Mr. Horton was found guilty of 14 counts of animal cruelty, 25 counts of animal neglect and 1 count of failure to obtain the proper license.  Telling reporters he lost almost half a million dollars in stock due to the seizure, he referred to this as a form of Communism.  Fined less than 15% of the fine established in rules of the state, Mr. Horton continues to operate his dog trade business throughout this time, and in September 2008 with new laws on the VA books, he says he'll likely take his business to another state!   Mr. Horton does NOT hold an USDA license to breed dogs.   |DOWNLOAD|
